# About Dragon Bookcase

Dragon Bookcase is a small set of free tools for people who keep a library at home: shelves that don’t sag, how far apart to set them, ISBNs, a catalogue, ways to order the shelves and how to look after old books. A friendly dragon guards the hoard; the facts are kept plain.

## How it works

Every tool runs in your browser. The calculations, the ISBN checks and the catalogue happen on your own device, and nothing you type, paste or import is sent to us or anyone else. The ISBN range data used for hyphens is bundled into the page, so the converter never goes online to look a number up. Your catalogue and your light or dark theme choice are saved in your browser’s local storage; see the [privacy page](https://dragonbookcase.me/privacy/) for details.

The site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies or cross-site tracking and never receives what you type into the tools.

## Where the facts come from

Each page lists its sources with the date we checked them. Shelf stiffness comes from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s *Wood Handbook*, the Composite Panel Association and manufacturers’ published data; ISBN rules from the International ISBN Agency; the classification outline from the Library of Congress; and book care from the Library of Congress, NEDCC, the Canadian Conservation Institute and official health agencies. Where we couldn’t find a reliable figure, we left it out or labelled our assumption.

## Not professional advice

This is general information, not engineering, conservation or medical advice. For heavy or wall-hung shelving ask a builder or engineer, for a valuable book ask a conservator, and if mould affects your health ask a doctor.

There is no company behind the site and no account to make. If something looks wrong, the sources on each page are the place to check.
